Project Description

The Little Shell Tribe of Chippewa Indians of Montana was granted federal recognition in 2019 and has a mission to “[work] together to provide services to foster development, growth, innovation and sustainability of the Little Shell Tribe.”

The Little Shell Community Needs Assessment project is one in a series of tribal needs assessments funded in part by the Montana Healthcare Foundation focused on the linkage between housing conditions and health outcomes in tribal communities in Montana. The project involved a survey of households containing Little Shell citizens within and outside of the Tribe’s 4-county service area and key stakeholder interviews with representatives of the Tribe’s departments and programs. These data collection efforts were coordinated by Big Water Consulting and designed & developed in a collaborative manner with the Little Shell Tribe to allow for partnership development, collective capacity-building, and the generation of an individualized Little Shell Community Needs Assessment dataset.

The design of the Little Shell Community Needs Assessment project was informed by lessons learned from the needs assessment project recently completed on the Flathead Indian Reservation by the Salish & Kootenai Housing Authority.
